Here's the skinny. I'm an Anesthesiologist who is just on the wrong side of 40 :-). But enough about the real world. It's hobbies that are more interesting. I enjoy camping, canoe tripping, water skiing, wine making AND Play-by-mail games (especially Play-by-email games).
Play by mail games are any games where turnsheets are sent to you by
snail mail or via email and you submit your orders or commands for your
position in the same way. Usually turns have a due date. These games can
be role playing, diplomacy or war games or even online versions of your
favorite board games. These games can have from 2 to hundreds of players.
The advantage of play by mail (PBM) is that often it is impossible to find
people with similar interests in games. Heck, it's often difficult
just to find people who still enjoy games. PBM games allow you to play
these games with people who share your interest from all over the world.
And the nature of snail or email playing is that it is not live. It is
asynchronous just as email is so that you can pick up your game whenever
you have time rather than when you can coordinate with others. Another
feature of these games is that they are not like the typical CD computer
game which tend to be you versus the computer in some sort of maze style
shoot 'em up. This is you versus other real live human beings (I assume
:-)). Often the computer houses or moderates the game itself and you don't
really need a computer to play.
At present my favorite games are: Starweb, Quest and Lizards.
