George's Devil Hunter Yohko Scrapbook

December 2001

You've seen the six Devil Hunter Yohko videos at your local video store. You know that Yohko is a cute 16 year-old girl who is forced to become a defender against supernatural forces. Did you also know there is a Mamono Hunter Yohko manga / comic book?

There are a number of Devil Hunter Yohko pages out there on the Web but I haven't seen any that mention the Mamono Hunter manga. I was surprised to see this book at an anime store in Toronto. It was printed in Japan and has a copyright date of 1996. You can see the English words Young King Comics. Inside I can see the name Gaku Miyao. I assume that is the artist. This name doesn't exactly match Takeshi Miyao who did character designs on the first Devil Hunter video. If you want to try to order this book maybe this code number will help: ISBN4-7859-1546-3.

chapter 1

This looks like the Devil Hunter Yohko we know from the Japanese anime but this girl has a different origin story.

The video Yohko is the latest in a long line of secret Devil Hunters who are females in the Mano family. That Yohko was trained in martial arts by her grandmother and had her supernatural-powers kick-started with a magic ring in the first animated adventure.

I can't read Japanese but judging by the pictures the manga Yoko gets her magic powers from a ring given to her by a magical animal! I wish I could read the story. There seems to be a conflict between a supernatural ibex and a supernatural dog.

chapter 3

You can see the magical ibex in the background.

There is a sequence that takes place in the past. A little girl's puppy becomes a demon dog. I wonder if this girl is an ancestor of Yoko because she has the modified Yin/Yang symbol on her chest that Devil Hunters wear. And that is about all I can tell you about the Yoko book.

Here is a VCD that I picked up in a large Chinese mall north of Toronto. You can play these on your PC if it is powerful enough and has an MPEG player. The words are spoken in Japanese and there are Chinese subtitles. I've seen another Yohko VCD at another Chinese store but it looks a little different and I assume it is produced by another company.

Here is a pretty song from the anime.

tonight
most bewitching of nights
the broken blossoms falling from the tree
the road
is stretching out far away
my hair blowing in the breeze
i made a promise like this to someone before
take care with the fragilest ambitions of my heart

on the fifteenth night
we will all be reborn again
once more in quest of
that ultimate joy

on the fifteenth night
we will all be reborn again
it's worth possessing
even if it's empty

in the moonlight

on the fifteenth night
we will all be reborn again
once more in quest of
that ultimate joy

on the fifteenth night
we will all be reborn again
it's worth possessing
even when it's empty

in the moonlight

alternate reading

Because Of The Full Moon

There is a road from Bojusura
To the riverside where the Japanese pampas
Grasses are waved by the wind
My forehead hair was spread by the wind
I promised someone with
Holding the fragile ambition of my mind

We are reborn in the full moon night
To search for the thing which is the best
We are reborn in the full moon night
The empty things sometimes become useful

Oh oh oh moonlight

It seems just like the time that I lost sight of my classmate of the cave
I am used to being alone by myself in the night
I am chewing gum
Let's show the fearless smile on our face
From here I hear the bell ringing from the
Distance in the eastern sky

Full moon reveals the energy
I will acquire the glamorous time
Full moon reveals the energy
Don't worry the longing is usually worse

We are reborn in the full moon night
To search for the thing which is the best
We are reborn in the full moon night
The empty things sometimes become useful

Oh oh oh moonlight

Have you seen the Devil Hunter game for the Sega Genesis? Unfortunately the R.A.R.E. site at http://www.gate.net/~mamo/rare.htm for Genesis games is gone.

Notice the copyright dates in the screen capture. The first must be when the Devil Hunter video game appeared in Japan. The 1989 date must be when the Devil Hunter comic was originally published.

Aya Hisakawa

There are some Devil Hunter songs by Aya Hisakawa the Yohko voice actor (who also was the voice of Sailor Mercury) at http://hda.nethosting.com/sailormoon/ a Sailor Moon page.

Ayaka Kisaragi

There is another anime character who is similar to Yohko Mano and that is Ayaka Kisaragi of Phantom Quest Corp. Ayaka runs her own "ghost-busting" agency called Yuugen Kaisha and she has trouble meeting men just like Yoko. She has a red dragon spirit-capture star sword that looks like Luke Skywalker's light-sabre and wore a slinky red dress in one adventure. Like the Devil Hunters she likes to give a little speech when confronting the bad guys. Maybe this is because both series were developed by Juzo Mutsuki.

I sent a message to Toho asking if there would be new adventures. This is the reply I got:

Dear Mr.Hong:

Thank you for your e-mail dated August 1, 1998.

Unfortunately, according to our production staff, they currently have no plan to produce a new title of "Mamono Hunter Yohko".

Thanking you again for being a Yohko fan

Sincerely,

Subject: DHY manga!

I'm really glad to see a webpage that finally mentions the manga. My friend came across a copy as well a few weeks ago, much to her suprise. In this time we've managed to figure out a few things about it. Neither of us are fluent in Japanese but so far we know that the girl from the past is the first devil hunter, Mano Haruka, and the man with her is named Koyatsu and we think he may be her fiancee. The puppy-dog/demon is named Raigo, and I know the ibex's name but I can never remember how to spell it! Veronica knows a lot more than I do, so if you want to know what she's figured out about it so far you probably ought to e-mail her at: LdyAzraelX@aol.com and tell her Calico sent you ^^ You two are the only people I know of so far that have managed to get copies of the manga... ^^ perhaps if she scans it for me I can do my own little hack job of translating it (-.-;; I can read but not that well) or see if my friend from Singapore or my japanese teacher can read it... I really want to see more of this manga!

Go to my AccessV Home Page to reach my Sailor Moon and Masakazu Katsura pages.

That is all for my Devil Hunter Yokho page.

If you are interested in pictures there are plenty in the archive at ftp.sunet.se. You will probably need to use a program like ws-ftp to get these files.

Looking for Devil Hunter fan-fiction? There are stories available at ftp.cs.ubc.ca.

Look for other Devil Hunter pages at Masato's Anime-Manga-Launchbase

more specifically Devil Hunter links.

Lastly please take a look at some of these other Yohko pages in the Demon Hunters Ring.
