What's A Domain Name?
A domain name is a website address such as www.mywebsite.com To get a domain name for your site you need to register the name with a registrar such as NameCheap for around $11 per year.
Having your own domain name isn't necessary unless you will be using a paid web host for your website ( See more info on what a web host is). Free web hosts provide an address along with the free webspace but it will be in the form of a subdomain such as www.mysite.webhostsite.com or www.webhost.com/mysite One of a few free hosts that allow domains with their free hosting is 50webs.com.
There are several advantages of your site having its own domain rather than one that comes with a free web hosting account:
- Your site's address will remain the same even if you change web hosts
- It looks better, especially on a business card or letterhead
- The address name can reflect better what your site is about
- It can be easier for people to remember
Some paid web hosts include a domain name with the price of their web hosting service or at an additional cost, but it is much better to register a web address separately from the web hosting account because it will be easier and faster to move your site should you decide to change web hosts in the future.
Because the price of registering domain names is so low many people register multiple domains in the hope that they will be able to resell them and make a profit. That's why a domain should be registered even before a site is ready, if you wait too long chances are the address you want will already be taken.
Tip
Some people who want to make money from reselling domains use crawlers on the internet to keep tabs on what domains people are interested in, and if the person hesitates to register, the crawler will register it in the hopes that the person will buy the domain from them. For this reason never check a domain's availability at the registrar's website unless you are ready at that moment to register it.
And that folks is a domain.
